The series unfolds in the remote Belarusian countryside, focusing on the work of Andrey Kachura, a local police officer. Near a reservoir, the headmaster of the local school, Volskiy, is found murdered, a single gunshot wound to the back of his head. A computer specialist, Denis Ryzhkov, arrives at the school as part of a placement program. He discovers a computer with illegal satellite connections and a complex program belonging to the deceased, set to launch something unknown in a few days. Meanwhile, at an abandoned Pioneer camp, German Markevich is organizing a jeep trial competition—a mere cover for his smuggling operation. However, it seems Markevich is working for someone else. Kachura finds a young woman suffering from amnesia, wounded in the head with the same weapon used to kill Volskiy—a Browning 1906. A new body is discovered at a transformer substation.
