Description

Yaroslavl, 1954. Former criminal investigator Pavel Khromov returns home after serving a prison sentence. Years earlier, he was framed for the theft of Princess Galitsina’s jewels, and now he is determined to discover which of his former colleagues betrayed him and destroyed his life. But another tragedy awaits him. During a violent robbery, the ruthless Black Wolves gang murders Pavel’s sister. His mother, unable to cope with the loss, dies soon afterward. What begins as a personal investigation into the past soon becomes a hunt for a criminal gang that acts with impunity and leaves the police with few solid leads. Yuri Garozy, an analyst with the Anti-Banditry Unit, offers to join forces with Khromov. But Pavel is not ready to trust the system that once ruined his life and decides to pursue the killers on his own. The closer he gets to the gang, the harder it becomes to tell who is truly on his side. Black Wolves is an eight-part period crime drama released in 2011 and starring Sergey Bezrukov. All eight episodes are available to watch online for free on EPIC+.

    Episode 1

    1954. Pavel Khromov, a former detective with the Yaroslavl Criminal Investigation Department, returns to his hometown after serving time in prison. He was sentenced for stealing Princess Galitsina’s jewels, a crime he did not commit, and is determined to discover which of his former colleagues framed him. But tragic news awaits him at home. His sister was murdered during a robbery carried out by the Black Wolves gang, and his mother died from the shock. Yuri Garozy, an analyst with the Anti-Banditry Unit, offers to help him find the killers, but Khromov decides to launch an investigation of his own.

    The Black Wolves prepare for another robbery, while the Anti-Banditry Unit struggles to find a reliable lead. Investigators identify Filipp Monin, a tipster connected to the gang. Pavel Khromov and his childhood friend Savosya conduct a parallel investigation. Moving faster than the police, they are the first to discover Monin’s address. Pavel must now decide how to use the information without allowing the official investigation to stand in his way once again.

    Filipp Monin is found murdered, cutting off the only lead that could have brought the investigators closer to the Black Wolves. Pavel Khromov becomes a suspect in the killing and is arrested once again. Yuri Garozy offers to help clear Pavel of suspicion, but on one condition: Khromov must take part in an operation designed to expose the gang. The leadership of the Criminal Investigation Department strongly opposes involving a former prisoner. Pavel must choose between his distrust of the system and his only chance to continue the investigation.

    Without their superiors’ knowledge, Yuri Garozy and Pavel Khromov begin preparing an operation against the Black Wolves. Meanwhile, Engineer-Colonel Nikolai Klimenko discovers that the wanted criminals are serving as officers and long-service enlisted personnel in the military construction unit under his command. The gang begins blackmailing him. As Garozy closes in on the truth, Klimenko faces an impossible choice: betray his closest friend and give in to the gang’s demands, or face prison himself.

    Left without protection, Pavel Khromov refuses to abandon the operation. To the detectives of the Criminal Investigation Department, he now appears to be no different from the members of the Black Wolves gang. But infiltrating their world is his only way to get closer to them. Khromov turns to his underworld contacts and claims to know where Princess Galitsina’s jewels are hidden. They agree to help in exchange for a share of the jewels. Pavel must continue the dangerous deception alone, with no support and no room for error.

    Pavel Khromov continues trying to establish contact with the Black Wolves. Meanwhile, with Garozy out of action, the investigators turn their attention to Pavel and become convinced that he has taken over as the gang’s new leader. The real Black Wolves are more than happy to let them believe it. With the police focused on Khromov, the criminals can divert suspicion from themselves and are even prepared to assist the Criminal Investigation Department in hunting down their enemy.

    With help from his underworld contacts, Pavel Khromov manages to identify one of the Black Wolves: Grecha. But Pavel himself is now being hunted. He walks into a police ambush and barely escapes the pursuit. Realising that time is running out, Khromov takes Grecha’s wife and daughter hostage, calls the military construction unit and arranges a meeting. One mistake could now destroy his entire plan.

    Posing as a criminal, Pavel Khromov meets the leader of the Black Wolves, Captain Sikora. He proposes that they retrieve Princess Galitsina’s jewels together, but Sikora does not trust him and suspects that Pavel may be a former police officer. Meanwhile, investigators trace the gang to the military construction unit where its members serve. The case is approaching its conclusion, but what they uncover there is so unexpected that it forces them to question everything they believed about the investigation.
