Barbara, a successful lawyer, is visiting investigator Troitsky in a cottage community where a local resident died last summer. At the reminder of the deceased's relative, she investigates the case, but sees a ghost who wants to tell her something.
Andrew notices that something is wrong with Barbara. She finds out that the woman's death is connected with her ex-husband, businessman Shanin, and convinces Andrew to resume the case. Suddenly Shanin appears on their doorstep.
Shanin demands that his wife's case be reopened. Barbara believes this is a trap. After a quarrel with Andrew, she reopens the investigation and collects testimony, but Daria, a relative of the deceased, withdraws her application to reopen the case.
Daria withdraws the statement in order to hide her husband from suspicion of murder. Andrew suspects that Barbara did not come to the village by chance and may be connected with another murder that occurred on the day of her arrival.
Barbara realizes that her secret has been revealed. Andrew interrogates the brother and lover of the deceased – both are innocent. The ghost pushes Barbara to commit suicide, but at the same time she realizes who the real killer is.
